ADMINISTRATION HELP AND DOCUMENTATION

Northwest Biophysics Consortium

Step 5: Creating a new or editing an existing profile

Before you can edit a profile, you will need to log into your Biochemistry user account under Registered Users in the right panel on the main administration page. Use your e-mail address as the user ID and your password to gain access. Once you are logged in, additional menu items will appear in the left menu bar. Select Update my Information to update your profile. Navigate to the bottom of the page and click on Edit. Fill out all fields. If you do not want to change your password leave the two passwords fields blank before clicking on the Update button.

For the field called PubMed Search String: you should enter the string you use in PubMed to search for your own publications. It will be used to update your publication list automatically. The field entitled Last PubMed Update will limit the search scope for a date range. Any dates earlier than the date specified will be excluded from the search. Once you performed a search, the date will be automatically adjusted to the day on which you last performed your PubMed search using this application. Together, the date and PubMed search string allow you to import your publications into your profile (in the correct format) without having to enter them manually. This process is further explained in Step 6: Importing publications from PubMed.

Every profile in the Biochemistry department has a user type associated with it. This controls which fields of the profile appear in various pages. Check the User Type drop-down box to make sure the most appropriate type is selected for your profile. If you are filling out a faculty profile, you can select your affiliation(s) with various tracks and research themes by selecting the associated check boxes. The field entitled Extended Tracks Mask: is reserved for future use and should not be filled out at this time. You can also specify a Research Emphasis, Projects investigated in your lab, Awards and Honors, a Personal Statement and indicate if you are accepting graduate students.

At the bottom of the page you are presented with several Browse buttons. These buttons allow you to upload two types of graphics to your profile. These two types of graphics are treated differently. The first type should be a portrait photo of yourself with a size of 200x300 pixels and be in jpeg format. The aspect ratio is enforced to guarantee uniformity in other webpages on the biochem website. If your photo image is larger than 200x300 pixels, make sure that the aspect ratio is still 2x3. The second type of graphic allows you to embed up to two images shown just below your Research Emphasis field, and should help to illustrate your research. You can upload one or two separate images, which will be displayed side-by-side; and you may supply each with its own caption. You can upload jpeg, png or gif images with a maximum size of 5 MB. The images should be in landscape format, meaning their widths exceed their heights. Each will be scaled upon presentation on the page to a maximum of 300 pixels in width, but may be loaded at full scale. Before uploading, you may want to check if your image displays well when scaled to a 300 pixel width.
